SOFT EDGES





















Flashing danger signs
for the city on the verge.
Swamps of monster communication,
campaigns and Colgate TV commercials
with white smiles and adjusted ties.
Selling square products, with square slogans
printed in square brochures, pressed in square fonts
on square pieces of paper.
BUT the meaning is ROUND.
We are so round, they say.
We consist of round opinions
containing round wholeness.
And we share our round ideas
to the left and the right
with round words, round manners
and round eyes
rolling round
while people roam around
from counter to counter
in sharp zig zag patterns.
And the counters are SQUARE
but the prizes are ROUND.
And the square products are bought with round hands
because there's plenty of space
in the square plastic bags
and on the designer shelves at home.
And it's high season,
and high seasons are ROUND.
And there are plenty of children's fantasy books for the holiday 
and women's got themselves a new genre
directly imported from America with sex and the city
chick flick girlfriend talk
in a ROUND rounded female format.
And for the men, we have biographies
from big men and small men
round men and square men.
A sea of crime thrillers, scientific discoveries 
food and cooking books.
And we need it all, they say. 
Politics, critics, laughter, tits and irony
in a big symphony.
But still everybody knows 
that the answer lies within
yet we search and search for a secret
and hope the answer lies in other people's books and thoughts.
We seek and seek for a meaning
for a place to feel safe, and at home.
We read and read,
suck and suck the words into us
hoping it will all make sense
hoping it will all add up to ONE
big, fat, fabulous, fucking SQUARE meaning
so we can put it into a box
and feel ROUND.
